Many people ask me about a tingling or weakness they feel in their arms, hands or fingers. Often these discomforts are the result of thoracic outlet syndrome - when the shoulders are pronated due to tension and shortening of the pectoralis minor and subscapularis muscles. Also, the scalene and sternocleidomastoid muscles shorten. This causes head forward posture and can lift the first rib toward the clavicle. This postural abnormality causes brachial and/or ulnar nerve compression, resulting in weakness or tingling in arms, hands and/or fingers.
